Change, Transform, Diversify : 2025.04.02

Hello everyone, this is Nagata.

Following the introduction of our Result series, today I’m pleased to present another standout from our 2025 Spring/Summer collection: the “Vary Series.”

Since the earthquake, lightweight and functional items like sneakers and backpacks have become the norm for their convenience. But recently—whether among my peers or around town—I’ve noticed a slow resurgence of shoulder bags, leather shoes, and boots.

Last year’s nylon-based shoulder bag series “Sash” and “Ark” included small-batch leather versions sold exclusively at our flagship stores and online—and the response was immediate. Inspired by this, we’ve designed a new series for the warmer months: a fully leather collection that dares to exclude backpacks altogether.

Premium Waterproof Leather

Let’s talk about the material. Recently, we’ve been using smooth, refined leathers—but this time, I wanted something more rustic. We reached out to several tanneries we regularly work with.

Sometimes we use their standard stock or previously developed leathers, but more often than not, we request something tailored to our concept. This time, we requested “a garment leather with a supple feel, finished with dye, and—crucially—waterproof.”

Creating waterproof, dyed leather within budget was a challenge, but one tannery in particular understood our vision. After multiple revisions, we arrived at a leather we’re proud of. And yes—it’s waterproof, so no worries if caught in the rain. Just wipe it dry with a towel—no special care needed.

Since it’s dyed leather, natural features like wrinkles, tiger marks, minor scars, or uneven coloring are intentionally left as-is—signs of genuine leather. We invite you to enjoy this rich, organic character as it evolves with time.

Design & Functionality

“If we’re making a leather bag, why not create a form rarely seen in leather?” That was the idea behind expressing the shape of a staff bag in full leather. While this style isn’t typically made in leather, it’s a form I use often. So we adapted it for daily use—adding features we’d genuinely want.

1. Additional storage beyond the main compartment.

Roll-top bags with a single compartment can be tedious to open and close repeatedly. So we added a quick-access pocket for smaller items. Leather’s ability to accommodate raw edges and cutouts allowed for clean zipper integration. We used YKK’s AquaGuard® zippers, laminated with polyurethane film for water resistance.

2. Roll-top closure options.

We debated whether to use a traditional roll-top closure. To achieve a clean roll, the leather would need to be thinner, and the height of the bag would increase. In the end, we opted for a simple buckle closure, while still allowing roll-top functionality if preferred. We fine-tuned the thickness and length of internal reinforcements to maintain a clean silhouette when buckled—this part took quite some time and effort. Huge thanks to the craftspeople who remade the samples over and over.

3. Dual shoulder strap positions.

Sometimes you need more space—maybe for unexpected purchases or A4 documents that shouldn’t be folded. By removing the buckle and attaching the strap to the D-rings at the mouth of the bag, it transforms into a flat silhouette shoulder bag that fits A4 items.

Alternatively, you can leave the strap in its original position and carry it like a folded shoulder bag. You can also attach charms, keyholders, or pouches to the unused D-rings for added function and flair.

4. Interior pockets.

Customers often ask whether our bags fit water bottles or long wallets. While few will ask if this design fits a laptop, these three items come up often.

This bag features three divided pockets on the back interior panel. The center holds a long wallet (vertically), and the two sides can accommodate 600ml bottles—or even a compact umbrella. For reference, a 5.8-inch smartphone is shown stored on the left side in the photo.

5. Nylon tape.

We debated making it fully leather or combining nylon. In the end, nylon tape made sense for the shoulder strap—more comfortable, adjustable, easier to store when not in use, and more cost-effective. I personally like the contrast of glossy tape against matte leather—it feels very “master-piece.”

Vary = To Change. To Adapt. To Diversify.

  • The bag changes form to suit your needs
  • The leather ages and evolves with time
  • It adapts to your lifestyle and daily moments

Beyond its transformable shape, the leather itself is meant to change—developing a unique character shaped by how you use it.

With a simple design and versatile size, the “Vary Series” comes in one silhouette and five colorways—perfect for anyone, regardless of age or gender.
